Working Title: The Emotional State of Fandom
For my inquiry-based research project for this semester, I would like to be given permission to study the effects of sporting events on the mental states of fans as well as to research if the level to which one is a fan has a greater affect on one’s mental state. While I have found only a handful of previous studies on this topic, I believe there is an adequate amount of information available to be able to further research and study this question. I am going to follow two different theories, BIRGing (basking in reflected glory) and CORFing (cutting off reflected failure). I plan on using not only scholarly articles to complete my research but also field studies such as surveys and interviews. With my research, I plan to find whether or not there is a link to the changing of a fan’s mental state and the outcome of the sporting event he or she is watching.
I believe this topic follows the guidelines set for this assignment because there is not a prepackaged answer, it is open to dispute, it can be answered with the tools I possess, there is a clear audience, it is based on an issue, and it explores how, why, or whether, the extent to which. I am aiming for my research to convey a message to psychologists who are researching mental states in different fields, especially sports fields. I think this study could be very important to the world of psychology because it could restart the topic of BIRGing and CORFing. In my opinion, research on these theories has started to slow down. While I know my research has the slimmest chances of making a huge “splash”, I do believe that it can still have an affect in the psychology field. Overall, my goal audience is psychologists in the sports field who have a research interest in BIRGing and CORFing.
My timeline for completing this assignment starts with researching the topic by consulting scholarly articles and eventually moving on to field studies. I believe that I do not have enough formal knowledge on the topic at the moment to successfully hold a field study. After the completion of the field study I plan to compile the data in a useful way in order to exhibit the results in my paper. Finally, after all of my research is completed and I have become an expert in this field of study, I will compose my paper and edit it multiple times.
After briefly skimming this topic and what is has to offer, the pitfalls are slim. One main conflict is whether there is enough information for myself to become knowledgeable on the subject but a main part of my research will come from Cialdini's basking in reflected glory studies. Although the American Psychological Association (APA) has multiple peer reviewed journals on mental states of fans, I am unsure of the overall usefulness of these articles, as they are not solely on this topic or cutting off reflected failure. Another is whether or not I can successfully develop a field study in order to further study this topic in the “real world”. While I do not know much about this topic, I do feel effects from sporting event outcomes. Therefore I can connect on a personal level.
In all, with your permission I would love to be able to research this topic in further depth.

Working Title: “Horror/Thriller Films and the Evolution of Violence”
Today I write to all of the horror/thriller film lovers out there. I want you to become aware of the ever changing violence in horror/thriller films.
Horror films are supposed to “scare” their audiences, but over time they have just become more gruesome. Take Saw for instance, the whole time I was watching the movie I was expecting to be scared, but not once did I find it to be scary. However the gore and gruesome scenes were there.
My purpose for working on this project is to bring insight to you, my audience, about the violence that occurs in horror/thriller films. Over time horror/thriller films have become more gruesome and more violent and we as a society may not be noticing the kind of effect that these films are having on us. To me, I believe this will be a very interesting topic to share with you because horror/thriller films are my favorite genre of movies. I enjoy classic horror/thriller films to modern day horror/thriller films. I have noticed the change in these films over time and I would like to dig into why these films have changed so much over the decades. I will be looking into gender roles that are being played in these movies. I will also be looking into desensitizing of our emotions of these movies. Are we becoming desensitized to these sorts of movies? I know they do not bother me. As far as how I will test these questions I am not positive. I know that I want to do a sort of focus group with a few people watching movies from over the decades and ask them how they think they differ, get their opinions on the movies.
My main research question that I want to study is: “How does gender and violence play a role into the horror/thriller films?” I decided to change my focus on my paper and instead of seeing how if these violent movies are affecting society, to that of gender roles and how they pan out in these films. I have found a few articles that discuss violence and gender roles and I think these will play hand in hand. I have begun to skim through these articles picking up on the main topics to make sure that they meet the criteria I am looking for. I will continue to collect information in the coming weeks.
Projected timeline for the research paper is to have five articles found and noted by 1 March 2013. Then I will progress from there. I have found five useful articles but only one of them has been noted.
Thank you to all of the horror/thriller film lovers out there. I cannot wait to research and provide you with information about this topic.

Working Title: Social Networks as an Academic Tool
Many people believe that social media and social networks such as Facebook are primarily for young people to have a place to connect with their peers. But is there a way that these newly designed technological tools can be used in the classroom or as academic aids for students to better understand certain concepts. Will there ever be a time that social networking will become social learning as a widely accepted practice and do some people already use these sights as a means of teaching and/or learning.
My purpose for working on this project is because i, myself, am intrigued by the phenomenon of social media. There are many perks that I have discovered that many people my age have not. Facebook and other sites on the Internet have many tools that can help users with their academics and professions if the site is executed properly. I am doing this research for my peers and I in order to expand our understandings of social media.
After my research is completed, my readers will feel a better understanding of the social media they are surrounded by and the best ways that they can use these new ideas from others to be able to help them out in their future endeavors.
Research Question:
How Does Social Media Impact College Students and in what ways can social media be a helpful learning tool?
I plan on researching many scholarly articles to find out about many other scholars viewpoints on the matter. The key to my research is to find out how college students use social media for and if they consider using social networking to learn. I plan on interviewing about 5-6 college students (more if needed) and ask them if they have ever used a social media/network format for academic or professional purposes. I would them formulate 3-4 follow up questions depending on their answers. These follow up questions will be later determined after my initial research and review of literature is complete.

Working Title: The Influences Behind College Majors:
Introduction:
Every student who enters college and graduates chose a major at one point. This incorporates millions of individuals who all made a decision; they all made a choice, on what to major in. My purpose for doing this research is to discover the reasons why they made these decisions.
Purpose:
My interests have never related much to this topic but recently, I’ve become overwhelmed with these decisions. I myself as a new college student have much to think about in the choosing of my own major. This has been an ongoing debate within me for over half a year now and this was the perfect opportunity for me to study it. Because of its relevance, I hope to enlighten not only myself, but maybe other who read my research or individuals who are involved within it such as interviewees.
To the Reader:
This general topic can encompass a wide range of answer and conclusions, therefore, its correlation with its readers in very high. Everyone who has a degree, made the decision to get that degree for a reason, I hope this will clarify to my readers, whether they be graduates, undergraduates, or soon to be undergraduates. The psychology of a person is extremely complex and many unconscious decisions are made that influence one’s life, I plan to analyze some of these influences and hopefully bring insight to my readers.
Directly, I want to be speaking to any college students. These students could be set on their path or could be very confused, the same as I am. I wish to open their eyes to the possibilities that are available to them and hopefully cause some sort of insight that will influence them to pursue a path that they find to be their way. Also, people who have already graduated college or even never attended could be a possible audience. Even though this is an extremely general audience, it is appropriate for this piece and has the ability to influence those who are more relative and correlated with the topic.
Topic Question:
I framed my research question as “What aspects of a person's life influence their decision to choose a college major and to what extent do they affect them? However, throughout my research I also plan on answer other questions regarding topics such as students’ minors and other academically related subjects.
Findings:
ReplyDeleteI have currently researched many articles on this topic but unfortunately many of them contain information that is only partly helpful to my research. For this reason I plan on rely almost entirely on my interviews to gather and collect the results I need to come to a conclusion.
Methods:
My plans for research are to analyze past scholarly articles and journals to gather information that is currently believed and accepted on the topic. I also plan to interview multiple college students, high school students, and college graduates to gain a wide understanding of their own personal influences in their decisions. These research subjects are going to be of different genders and ethnicities to eliminate the potential of bias. With this information, I want to compare the two aspects of the topic and come to my overall conclusion.
Timeline:
After completing my Interpretive Summary assignment, I plan to continue researching articles and journals to gather what information I can. By the last week of February or early march I plan to begin my interviews with people and slowly analyze and record my information and gradually work on my rough drafts and final paper.

Statistics from UCF: TBA
Difficulties:
The hardships I may encounter in this topic are the lack of relevant and useful information that is available in already written articles and papers. I believe I can overcome this by relying on my interviews and own personal research. However, this unfortunately may also be a problem. I predict it to take some time to gain the information I need out of even just one individuals, and it also may be difficult to gather information from college graduates.

Working Title: Evolving Parenting Styles
Purpose: Although I am undeclared as to what my major will be, I am leaning towards something in Psychology, as I have always found it to be a fascinating subject. I love finding patterns in everything and learning about people’s behaviors. This research project will give me the opportunity to do both of these things. Also, I am from a family of three children and I have been noticing similarities between each of us and other families that have three children, and I would like to explore if there is an correlation with the order each child is born and if the differing parenting styles plays a role.
Research Question: “How have parenting styles evolved over time, and how do they influence the behaviors of their children?” It is plain to see that, for the majority of parents, their styles have changed both from that of their parents styles, as well as from child to child. I will be investigating why there are such changes, and what, specifically, those changes are. Also, if there is any correlation between the changing styles and differing personalities of their children.
Findings: So far I have found a couple scholarly articles through the UCF library that seem to be effective. The majority of it, however, contains conflicting ideas, which makes it hard to decipher what is true and what is not. Within one article, several studies were said that the eldest child generally had the highest IQ, while other articles said that title belonged to the youngest. I will need to conduct my own research in order to see which are reliable and correct. It is much easier to find scholarly articles on how parenting styles affect personalities than how parenting styles have evolved. Other than these recent findings, I have no previous knowledge on this subject.
Methods: The main source of my information will come from researching scholarly articles online drawing conclusions from those articles. I will also be conducting interviews of parents, asking them how and why their parenting styles are different from their parents, how their styles has changed for each of their children, and how that correlates, if at all, to the differing personalities of their children.
Timeline: I hope to have interviewed 2 families by the first week in March. I also will continue looking for sources and scholarly articles for my paper, in order to build my research.

Subject: Research Proposal, The Psyche’s Effect on Physical Performance
Research Question: How can one’s psyche- mental state or mind (meaning thoughts and feelings) - affect his or her physical performance? If so, how detrimental or effective can it be towards physical performance and or fitness? How can we train ourselves into developing a positive state of mind to positively impact our outcomes?
Issue: The issue at hand is the detrimental or positive effect visualization plays in the improvement of physical performance, not limiting poor physical performance as well. Through examination of the thoughts, feelings, motivation and reflections one has, I’ll be able to address the issue of the psyche and its effect on performance; may it be professional sports and similar endeavors, to weight training and fitness or even physical therapy recoveries. How can we aid our bodies’ by thinking and visualizing the inevitable success ahead of us? One of our major limitations is thinking about how badly we’ll fail as oppose to how well we’ll surmount our individual obstacles. The discussion on the connection between the body and mind has been ongoing with refutations and buttress from all angle, however, I’ll put myself in the midst of the conversation, adding my own personal experience and research to the huddle; not agreeing or disagree with the propositions made by respective sides, but drawing my own conclusion as a result of my findings. The results I gather from research along with the sources I’ll draw on for supporting information will reveal to my audience how mental visioning, reflecting on one’s thoughts and feelings can act as a performance enhancement.
Purpose for Research: As mentioned before, the ultimate purpose of posing such a question is to provide the fitness audience and others in general how the connection between body and mind really affects our performance; will isn’t limited to solely physical performance but mental as well (an outlying question).
Audiences’ needs, interest, values and beliefs aligned with my research: Fitness like fashion and music is unfortunately a trend, but for some, it’s a lifestyle and for me, it’s becoming the latter. My endeavor to achieve the physique of a fitness model strikes some as interesting but the majority as a means of motivation for themselves to ‘follow the trend’. From the ‘’freshmen fifteen’’ to the ‘’Jersey Shore gym tan and laundry’’ everyone around campus has some aspiration of getting in shape and this is where my research question plays its role. Achieving success in the gym, as well as in your everyday life doesn’t just entail hard work, it also involves positive thinking, and a ‘’Winner’s’’ outlook. I certainly believe my research will aid those who negatively think of themselves never achieving a task to better position themselves to think positively and see the benefit it possess.
How I’ll locate, find and get additional information and arguments about my topic: Aside from using the library database and online fitness magazines to pull data from, I’ve decided on the inclusion of a few interviews and case studies. The UCF Recreation and Wellness Center has Personal Trainers on staff who will be a great source of information with their first-hand account on physical fitness training. In addition to that, I intend on including a few interviews with consistent gym goers as well; this will provide a different scope on how individuals rank their mental state in relation to a great workout session. And to provide a means of comparison with my personal self-study, I hope to get an individual with similar goals as mine to follow along and keep a journal log about their workout activities, thoughts and motivation.
Indicate research timeline: The research timeline is approximately four months, however, the ‘’case study’’ of myself will last an entire year; it began on January 7, 2013 so I’ve already started the research. Like my case study, the discussion about ‘’the mind, body connection and performance’’ will continue long after the research project’s conclusion.
ReplyDeleteDiscuss key challenges I’ll have to face with the research: Among the many challenges I’ll face conducting my research, the major obstacle is the lack of consistence on my part with the journal log I’m expected to keep as a quantitative data source and case study. If I’m not being forthright with my reflections and what’s written, I’m providing insufficient and unreliable data. Another issue with this project is the objectivity of the data; the case study isn’t a bad idea, however, having myself as the only point of analysis is a bias that won’t be overlooked by the audience and so finding another individual with similar fitness goals as mine is a must. This other person will provide another viewpoint, one specifically their own which may or may not juxtapose with my on a positive note. A part from not finding someone willing to work alongside me with their own journal log, I’ll be presenting a one-sided scope on a broad subject.

Revised Research Proposal: Disowning my Body- Effects of the Modeling Industry on Young Women
Context:
A good deal of young womens’ perceptions about body image stem from media’s portrayal of models. I know for a fact that these images are manipulated in multiple ways. Still, many young women take these images at face value and judge themselves against the ideal. Even “plus size” models don’t accurately portray the average plus sized woman.
Direction of Research:
My main idea is phrased in the form of an inquiry based question, “How does the modeling industry affect young women and their ability to ‘own”, or love, understand, and accept, their bodies?” There is a general consensus that the modeling industry depicts unreal standards of beauty. There also seems to be an agreement that the everyday woman has struggled to meet these ideals and has been dissatisfied because of it. I want to know how plus sized and regular sized fashion models affect how both larger and smaller women view themselves. I will show both positive and negative physical and mental effects.
Purpose:
I intend to show that even when the modeling industry attempts to show “relatable” looking models, they still fall below the mark. I hope to expose the inaccuracy of the plus size body portrayal. I intend to show that these portrayals disappoint women by not given them a correct idea of how they would look wearing the advertised outfit. I hope by exposing these flaws in the modeling industry I can help young women to feel more accepting towards their own bodies.
Research:
To begin, I’ll gather source evidence from magazine and internet ads. Then, I’ll do textual analysis of scholarly articles to gather evidence about the effects of the ads on young women. I would like to also hold a focus group of young female students to discuss their perceptions of themselves and models. By March 12th, I plan to have my sources compiled and my main evidence gathered.

SUBJECT: SAC’ed: A Study on Surface Air Consumption Rates
This study is focused on researching the factors that most largely affect an individual’s Surface Air Consumption Rate (SAC Rate). The main audience for this paper will be that of the Scuba Diving community, however, the information contained may benefit several parties.
What factors have the most significant effects on a diver’s SAC Rate? This is the question I wish to answer through my studies. By answering this question, being an avid diver, I will know what I can do to improve this rate and extend my own dives.
In order to understand the significance of this number, once must first understand two types, of many, of diving. Most divers who participate for recreational purposes dive in No Decompression Limit (NDL) profiles. In other words, they dive until they reach a mathematically calculated limitation and then surface safely with minimal risks of acquiring Decompression Sickness (DCS), a condition where dissolved nitrogen gas is forced from the blood and forms bubbles, causing extreme pain and low blood pressures. However, highly trained divers and commercials divers, known as Tec Divers, are taught how to properly exceed these NDL’s and calculate how to long they need to decompress before surfacing; this is known as Tec Diving. Just as it sounds, should something go wrong underwater, Tec Divers my not ascend to the surface safely without stopping and will have an extremely high possibility of getting DCS.
While the risks of operating in this manner are extremely apparent, the benefits often times outweigh the risk to these individuals, including myself. So if we can stay down as long as we want, why does a SAC Rate matter? Believe it or not, this is extremely important for many reasons, but the largest and most apparent reason is this; divers can only take down as much air as they can carry, even then, there is still a realistic limitation to how much that may be. Well how do I stay underwater longer if I can’t bring more air? It’s simple, breathe less! Now the question becomes something like ‘how do I breathe less?’, and that’s exactly what I’m interested in looking for!
There are many opinions within the community on why or how SAC Rates can change. One of the most agreed upon is that divers will develop a better (smaller) SAC Rate as they dive more and gain experience; makes since, but it could take thousands of dives to get to a noticeably different level, so it might not be the best option. I have also heard of ‘super athletes’, such as Lance Armstrong, who have the ability to perform on a third of the amount of air the average human uses to perform the same task, thus raising the question ‘how does one’s athletic ability effect their SAC Rate?’. In addition to these factors, I also wish to study how age, size, gender and smoking habits affect the SAC Rate in individuals.
Seeing as divers log every dive they do, all of the information I would need to calculate correlations in already present. My plan is to conduct a survey-style study to gather quantifiable data and fit it into formulas and graphs to show what relationships exist in the data. I will post my survey on the most popular online forums in hopes of receiving information from several hundreds of participants. Should I not reach my goal number of participants, I will only analyze the relationship between athletic ability and number of dives.
There are many challenges for conducting this project. Some of these challenges include limited prior research due to the extreme conditions of this activity and recent development of this activity, acquiring the number of participants required to form correlations and displaying data in a non-intrusive manner. Upon approving this topic for continuation, I plan to create and administer my survey as soon as possible followed by continued research with NOAA and respective dive organizations as well as finalize the direction I wish to take in my studies.

Direction of Research: Originally raised as a vegetarian in California, throughout my life health a part of growing up. Tracing back to my childhood I grew up eating organic and naturally raised food and to this day continue. Many aspects influence people to make food choices, most noticeably in the United States, is the media. Whether it is through commercials or local ads there are always some sort of designated time or space for food. Looking further into this, one can notice that the food the media presents us is usually processed, unhealthy, or fast food. This is a real concern for me as these advertisements reach out to large amounts of people and there is indisputable evidence telling us that the consumption of these foods is unhealthy and correlates with many health related diseases.
ReplyDeleteResearch Question: How is the vegetarianism “green movement” affected by the media and does location play into this?
Purpose: Being involved in the organic lifestyle, I would like to further investigate the media influences on food and vegetarianism as well as location factors. Food is essential to our survival, whether you consume meat or do not, the media has a dramatic impact on our exposure to food, more often unhealthy and processed foods than not. I have a general idea on the rational behind why we are exposed to foods we ideally are not supposed to be eating, but I would like to gain some further explanations to attain a more precise answer. Also it seems like location plays a part in what we eat, more specifically the degree of additives that goes into what we eat. I would like look into some percentages that could back up my assumption.
Methods: In order to conduct a thorough investigation on my topic, I am going to need to seek out individuals who both live by organic eating, those who eat unhealthy, vegetarians, and people from different states. All these types of individuals will play a part in obtaining an array of opinions on these topics, and will each contribute vital responses to some of the posed questions and assumptions.
Findings: So far I have come across a few individuals from the state of Florida, that actively engage in eating natural foods, as well as some people that generally eat processed foods. The findings are that the individuals choosing to eat processed foods have grown up on that basis, and are generally influenced by what they see in ads on television and the radio. On the other hand the few people that consume natural products do so by choice, more specifically from research based investigation through the internet and popular magazines.

Working Title: Heads Held High- American Nationalism
Research Question: How has American Nationalism influenced attitudes and actions in American History?
Issue/Purpose
My issue involves many aspects of American Nationalism/patriotism. I want to research and learn more about the beginnings of nationalism in America and how it has influenced our attitudes and actions. I have personally observed how the leaders of our country have reacted to the tragedies and successes of our country, and I want to show people a glimpse of my observations through this research project.
I have always been interested in the amount of pride Americans have for our country. I also have been ashamed of events that have resulted from this pride. It led me to the question of how much importance do we put on national symbol such as the American
Flag. And how do other countries view us when it comes to national pride. This is a sensitive subject because of the war and the many families with loved ones fighting for our country. Although I am no anti-war citizen, I pay close attention to the words and gestures used by political leaders in times of peril.
I hope my reader’s both young and old will hopefully gain a new insight on nationalism in America. Values and beliefs have drastically changed throughout generations, it will be interesting to research the possibility of that being a change in national pride.
I plan on researching American reactions to drastic events and wars. Observing how leaders in America guide our country in times of peril will be my method. This will be the heart of my research. I also want to conduct a survey on news station clips and record the opinions of people that view the clippings. The survey will show different views of demographics regarding my research topic. I hope to prove that there is even a difference evident after conducting my research.

ReplyDeleteTitle- Sharks in the Media
Issue- The issue I want to research about is how the media portrays sharks. Many species are becoming critically endangered, which will have a negative effect on our environment. Sharks are the top predators/scavengers of the marine food web so the impact will be greater than people assume. It seems that the image the media is portraying to the viewers is making people less likely to care about this issue.
Purpose- My purpose for working on this project is to find out if the media really does give a negative outlook on the shark’s image to the viewers. If it does, then we will know that it needs to change in order for people to start taking a stand on the issue of sharks being endangered. I also am very interested in sharks myself and believe they are misunderstood creatures. I wanted to write a research paper showing people that they aren’t what the media makes them look like, that sharks are the victims not humans. I figured if I wrote a research paper on this topic, it would make more people aware of what is really happening to sharks. Which is why my other part of the paper will be about what is really going on with sharks while this is happening in the media.
Readers: I hope after reading my research paper, my readers will have a different outlook than they had before on sharks. They should have an open mind while reading it, and be able to look past the negative “single story” they have been told about sharks their whole life. My readers will be anyone interested in the environment or how the media effects their viewers.
Research Question: How does the media portray sharks and does it effect our viewpoints?
Key Findings: So far I have only found a few articles that deal with the same kind of research question. They have found that news gives sharks a negative and “scary” image. That the endangered sharks are hardly brought up in the newspapers, which should be getting a lot more attention. In order for conservation to work, people need to change their views on sharks.
How I’ll Find Information: My topic for study is not a very popular one. I’m having a very hard time finding articles specifically on my topic, so I’m going to have to broaden my research. I’m going to look up topics not only on how the media portrays sharks, but other things in the media and how it effects people’s viewpoints. I’m also going to research about the kinds of sharks that are being endangered and how it is happening. Also what the consequences of the decreasing shark populations will be.
Timeline: I’m going to first collect articles and annotate them while reading. Then I’m going to organize my findings in the proper way. I will organize my research finding or do my interview questions, whatever way I end up choosing to do my study. After I finish that, I will write my paper and revise it multiple times.

Working Title: The Apple Phenomenon
The Question
An App for this an App for that, “Siri where is that one pizza place down town?”, “have you downloaded the new temple run?” These are all phrases identifiable with people in the iphone community. Odds are at least half of the people who read this have an Iphone and I’d be willing to bet that all of them at least know one person with an Iphone. How did we get to this point not only as Americans but as human beings? Never before in the existence of mankind has a product been craved as much as Apple’s Iphone. The Apple Cooperation is one of the most successful fortune five-hundred companies not only in existence today, but over the course of history.
The Goal of Research
The goal of my research over this semester is to investigate the Apple industry and their marketing strategies. I want to learn how a company manages to become a pioneer in the technological distribution industry. The truth behind it all is that apple only really has three products yet based off of their success as a company one would think that they sold everything from socks to automobiles. Why do people stand in lines 200 people deep to by a product that is virtually identical to something they already own? Is it for social status or just pure personal satisfaction?
Methods
First and foremost I want to look into the history of Apple as a company. Everyone knows the story of Steve Jobs retaking his company and propelling it heights unimaginable by its former CEO, but how exactly did he do it? In an interview Jobs said “I don’t want to sell you what you want, anyone can do that. My goal is to sell you products you didn’t even know you wanted”. Wow time out! First is that even legal!? Second who comes up with that kind of business plan? Little did we know Steven Jobs was on to something and we would all be asking ourselves “how did we miss this?”
How does Apple year after year convince us to buy their “all new and improved” shiny new toys? Do the clever commercials with the dancing shadow people draw us in or is it something more? I want to research back into Apples commercial history and take a look at first how many people saw these commercials second I want to look at how many different advertising methods Apples uses. Sometimes it seems like even if you tried you couldn’t avoid that little Apple with a bite in it. Product placement in popular T.V. shows could also contribute to Apples popularity and the spreading of their name. How do all these things come to happen? This is a question I hope to answer with my research behind the creative marketing genius that is the Apple industry.

Sustained meditation influencing long term effects impacting athletic performance.
Purpose: I have decided to choose this topic for my research project because I am a very athletic person and being a student athlete I am interested in what types of meditation athletes use before a game or race to improve their performance, and how they keep that mind set.
Research Question: How does an athlete sustain a focused mind set throughout their performance? What are the contributing factors to this?
To the Reader: Many people in the world at one time most likely were either an athlete or enjoyed watching intercollegiate/pro sports. It would be interesting to research how an athlete keeps a good mind set throughout practice or games, and more specifically how they get to that mind set.
Findings: I have just re planned my whole topic, so I have to find brand new sources. So far, I’ve read that athletes focus their attention on external factors and revert to positive monitoring in attempt to maintain their performance. In addition to that, results have shown that successful self regulation involved a calm mental state, smooth rhythm in performance, concentration and flow. Preparation before a competition or practice that was not well planned and regular, the influence of stress and mental fatigue meant an un successful performance.
Locating Information: I plan on finding additional information from scholarly articles from the UCF library data base. I will be my own subject for this paper, I will be recording how I feel mentally and emotionally before practice every day as well as my mind set after practice for two weeks. Then for the next two weeks I plan on researching different mediation techniques, as well as using some of the ones I found in the research articles and use them on myself while recording if I feel a difference or not.
Timeline: I will be working each week on finding source articles and making notes about them on a word document. Each day I will start recording my feelings and thoughts throughout practice for a duration of 4 weeks total.

Research Proposal: “How and to what extent can music influence the level of emotion an individual feels in a specific situation.”
Direction of Research: The question that I will be researching is, “Does music affect the level of emotion an individual feels?” I believe that music is part of our everyday life and in a sense can manipulate your feelings. I will be researching the extent to which music can amplify or diminish your initial emotional response.
Gap: It’s been said that music can affect an individual’s emotion, but to what severity? To what extent is music used to manipulate our emotions and perspectives?
Purpose: With this project, I intend to prove that music is a strong factor in an individual’s emotions. Music is added to certain scenes in films in order to heighten and assure a specific emotion from the audience. Certain music is played in clothing stores and restaurants in order to spark a specific feeling within the customers. There is no doubt that music can affect and spark certain emotions. My question, however, is to what extent does it affect you. Can you force an individual to feel whatever emotion you would like simply by the use of music?
Context: I firmly believe that music is an important force that can be used when dealing with people’s emotion. Music is a form of expression that is meant to have an individual feel the song more than just listen to it. Because of this, music is used in our everyday life. Certain restaurants that aim for fast service play upbeat fast music in order for you to feel that your experience was fast just like they had promised.
Research: To begin researching, I will give each of my subjects an emotion stability test to ensure than each subject is okay emotionally. I will then divide my group of subjects into three separate groups. Each group will be shown the same commercial. One group, which will be my control group, will view the commercial with no music in the background. I will then give each individual a piece of paper with the number one through ten written on the paper. I will then ask each individual to rate their emotion from 1 being the lowest to 10 being severely emotional. I will then have another group watch the same commercial with a song that is meant to heighten the specified emotion. They will then also receive a paper with number one through ten, and asked to rate the level of emotion that they felt while watching the commercial. The third group will also watch the same commercial; however, they will be given a song in the background that is meant to lessen the emotion. They will also receive a paper with the numbers one though ten written on the paper, and then they will be asked to rate their emotion. After I have recorded all the results I will compare them to see if the addition of music in fact affected the level of emotion felt by the subjects.

Research Proposal – “How does learning English as a second language affect elementary school children’s progress in school?”
Direction of Research: My main idea is to see how elementary school children are affected in their schooling by learning another language before they learn English. There have been many studies done that say being bilingual is beneficial. What I am going to see is what affects does being bilingual have on those young children who did not learn English first. Did learning English second affect them at all in their schooling?
Gap: It has been said that being bilingual is beneficial to people and that those people have a certain advantage. What I want to see is does being bilingual benefit young children in the United States if their first language is not English.
Purpose: Being that my first language was Spanish and not English I do not feel it has hindered me at all. I did not speak English until I started school and it was taught to me. A lot of people in my hometown (Miami) do the same thing with their children, as I would like to do with mine. What I want to see from this research is if there is any negative side affects to not teaching your child the native language first.
Context: Studies have been done that show that people who are bilingual have certain advantages in life but these studies stop there. People have been reading studies on how being bilingual is a positive thing, but are their certain ways that are more beneficial than others? Is there an ideal way to become bilingual?
Research: This part is the part I am struggling with the most. I am not sure exactly what I am going to do yet as far as research goes. Some of the ideas I had were to actually go into elementary school and administer a certain test to for example a group of 2nd graders. Amongst this group would be some only English speaking children, some ESOL children, and maybe some children who learned English first and then picked up another language. I am not sure what I would test them on or how I would determine whether or not the language they first learned had anything to do with their actual scores.

Working Title
•“I AM Heathcliff”: A Psychoanalysis of Heathcliff and the Metaphorical Obsession of Sibling Passion in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights
Issue
•I plan to explore the issue of the unnatural closeness of the two main characters, Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, in the novel Wuthering Heights. I want to analyze Heathcliff and how his experiences throughout the novel, in regard to familial issues and to his love and adoration of his step-sibling, Catherine, affect his actions and his attitude towards himself and everyone else in the novel.
Purpose
•Wuthering Heights was introduced to me at a very young age by my aunt and is one my favorite British literary works. Heathcliff is such an interesting and complex character and I think it would be great to delve into his mindset to try and figure out why he is motivated to do the things he did Wuthering Heights.
Describe your readers’ needs, interests, values, and beliefs.
•I think that readers of my paper need not have particular needs, interests, values, or beliefs. However, in this paper I will discuss or attempt to bring the romantic aspect of Heathcliff and his adopted sibling, Catherine, into a different light than solely focus on the negative connotation that is brought on by such a taboo topic. So I believe that readers of this paper will definitely have to be patient and be open-minded to be able to view this subject both on an analytical and metaphorical plane.
State your research question(s).
•What role does the strongest emotion play in Heathcliff’s overall development throughout the novel?
•How does Heathcliff’s passion for Catherine affect his relationship with her and other characters throughout the novel?
•What is the correlation between Heathcliff’s past and his resentful attitude overall in the novel?
*Can psychologists today learn from a character's actions?
Key findings
•Rejection is a key finding in my research. Rejection from other characters leads to sorrow, doubt, and anger which are prevalent throughout the novel.
•Passion is also a big issue to talk about. I believe that I’ll have to define passion as it is and by how it is shown in the novel.

Additional information, ideas, and arguments
•My main source is the novel itself. As for additional information, I could start by looking for academic and peer reviewed articles on the UCF library database. I’m not sure that there are magazine or newspaper articles that deal with my topic, but I could also try and locate those as well. I believe that my main source of information will consist of either scholarly journals that are aimed towards my subject, or books that deal with the subject.
Project timeline
•I’ve been working on an outline to try and organize my thoughts. I’d really like to have a definite direction, or a strong foundation when it comes to my paper, so I’m making sure that I’m taking my time placing my thoughts in a cohesive manner. I’m basically spacing out my research. Between finding articles, analyzing, and going back and annotating in the novel itself, I feel that my time will be wholly spent.

Title: “Progression of Filmmaking and Modern Motives for Producing Motion Pictures”
In today’s society, anyone can now pick up a camera and make a movie. This was not true, back in the early 1900s. Many aspects of the filmmaking process have continued to stay more-or-less the same since the beginning of the film industry, but filmmaking has definitely evolved. I want to focus on digital filmmaking and how it has taken over film. My purpose for researching this topic is to have a better understanding of what motivates filmmakers today and how the filmmaking process has evolved over time. My audience could range from filmmakers to an average moviegoer. A filmmaker would be interested in knowing how the filmmaking process has changed and how it might continue to evolve.
Research question:
Why are people making films today? How has filmmaking evolved in just the past few decades?
Timeline:
I plan on finding many peer-reviewed sources, but I believe it is very important to understand what precisely is influencing people to make films. So, I will interview inspiring filmmakers asking what influenced them to make films.

Working Title: “Animal-Assisted Therapy”
As a Psychology major I have decided to do my research on a topic which will give me knowledge I can use for the rest of my career.
All my life I’ve loved animals and felt that my pets seem to always make me happy so I will research the scientific and psychological effects behind this. The issue is there are many people who are either lonely, ill or depressed and there are many pets who are sad and lonely in need of a home.
The purpose of this project is to bring light to a form of alternative medicine. Usually patients who are going through a form of depression are treated with traditional cognitive or behavioral therapy, other times patients are given medication to make the symptoms go away. I like to explore alternative therapy that would make the person less reliant on pills or expensive therapy sessions inside a hospital or clinic. I once read online that the most effective way to treat depression is through exercise or spending time with an animal, I chose to investigate the latter.
My research project raises quite a few questions but I will be focusing on the ones I find most important. What is the history between Animal and Mankind and how have we progressed? Why do animals and pets have such an effect on those suffering symptoms of depression? Finally, How can animals be used for therapy and how can one become involved?
Through this project I hope to learn both about Depression and Animals alike. Unfortunately I have been going through some rough times with my depression and am currently seeking ways to treat myself. I hope to gain knowledge I can share with others as well as grow as an individual and experiment with animal-assisted therapy. There is a possibility I will encourage others to seek help if they are feeling depressed or lonely as well as encourage people to adopt!
So far the only information I know is animals do in fact help with depression and there is therapy already established for this. I wish to expand on the subject on how and why it is an effective method.
My projected timeline is to have at least 2 interviews before the end of February.
For this project I will use online journals, books, interviews and personal experience. I plan on going to the counseling center at UCF to speak with the counselors there. Animals are brought to campus every now and then so I want to interview at least 5 students and see their reaction. If time allows it I also want to visit a nursing home, children's hospital and/or pet shelter. I don't want to simply write about what I read in books or articles but I want to input my own personal research.
So far I am using some of the following articles for my research:

ReplyDeleteTo: Anyone who enjoys music and preferably listens to the radio
From: Natasha Minoso
Subject: Research Proposal
Working Title: The Evolution of Pop music: From depth to despair
My issue stems from the high demand for “popular” music to be played on the radio rather than actual, in depth music. Most listeners will become fans of a song because of how easy it is to either remember or just overall enjoyable. Because of this, many great musicians and artists are now “selling out” and conforming to what society wants, rather than expressing themselves through their music. My purpose for bringing up this research is to enlighten the general public about their choice in music and how some music is convenient to listen to because of the radio and its availability. Does the listener appreciate what they hear or do they like the simplicity that is given to them on the radio? Pop music is now devoid of depth and complexity, leaving no room for actual understanding of the music. Intertextuality has been overused and abused in the sense that pop music now has either the same back track with different lyrics or even vice versa. Repetition has become a new phenomenon in the music industry (especially pop music). My reader should be interested in music in general. Their taste in music can vary so there are no limitations. Their values and beliefs may affect what they listen to, especially if they avoid listening to the radio.
My research question that I will propose is as follows: Can a person listen to a song, read a line from the lyrics and off the bat decide whether they would hear more of it? Or do they need an artist’s image and name to be attached to the song to be deemed worthy of listening to?
Key Findings:
In Fauteux’s article, a key point that stood out: “this article addresses power relationships between the mainstream music industry and the cultural work that attempts to challenge it.”
In Wald’s article, many subjects that relate to his writing include: Music – Popularization, Gender role, popular music and Young consumers.
In Székely’s article, a major key point that stood out was the fact that his purpose of the paper was to “ explore the possibility of a refashioning of the broader category of “the popular,” and further, of “popular music,” which, because of its obvious link to mass consumer culture, presents a challenge for any claims as to its transformative potential and capacity for resistance.”
Timeline: My timeline is under construction right now and is subject to change. I would like to set up an experimental survey within the next week (Feb 8-15) that will help with the beginning of my paper. The week after will be focused on gathering all of the sources I will be using and reading each one whilst annotating and forming an informal research paper guide. My guide will have all the key points I have taken from each article/source that I found to be insightful for my paper.

“The Legitimacy of the NFL Concussion Lawsuits and their effect on the Sport”
Recently many studies have been done on former athletes that have found that many of them suffer from some sort of injury brought about from their playing days, while most of these injuries occur in the NFL and over 5,000 concussion and injury lawsuits have been filed against the NFl.
As many sports fans may know there are many studies currently being done on the brains of people who play professional sports to see if being a fan of football I feel it is necessary to look at the lawsuits and see if there is any legal ground about them and whether or not the NFL truly cares about player safety or just cares about the money that they could lose from the lawsuit.
My Purpose for writing this is to get an in depth look at a sport that I love and to see what it is that can happen to people who play it and whether the owners of the sporting teams are really willing to make the game safer for the right reasons.
Football is the most popular sport in the U.S. right now, the NFL generates over 11 billion in revenue each year and there are millions of football fans and I feel that not all of them are aware of the issues that are currently going on in court and the effects they could have on the league. My research question “is the NFL truly concerned about player safety and about the players that have filed these concussion lawsuits and whether or not the players are within their rights to sue the NFL for their injuries”
I will attempt to find additional sources by searching the UCF library and Google scholar and will try to find some statistics about the lawsuits and the number of plaintiffs who currently are in court and what the NFL plans to do about player safety.
My timeline is to have read up on the lawsuits currently filed and to read about any waivers signed by former NFL players when they entered the league that would deter against concussion ;lawsuits by spring break.

Research Proposal - “What influences discussions on environmental issues?”
Beginning Issues: Over the years technology has greatly been growing and impacting our lives. However, people fail to see how it is effecting our environment. Many years ago the economy was based around agriculture and now due to technology, the earth is being destroyed because work is done in buildings. Pollution and the burning of fossil fuels are also destroying the earth. This issue was recognized as one of the greatest issues in the Presidential election of Obama vs. McCain. However, in the last Presidential election it wasn’t brought up once. So the question is what influences this discussion? Are there people who are able to control the matters that are discussed in elections?
Purpose: I am working on this project because I am interested in learning about environmental projects regarding the use of alternative energy, as well as environmental cleanup. If there are ways to make it a political issue that the government will take control on, there will be more efficient ways to help.
Context: I know very little on this subject area but in my beginning research I have found that there are very crucial climate changes that have occurred over the past centuries. These have already been affecting certain animal’s lives and how soon will it take to affect human life, if it hasn’t already.
I would like to research how these changes can be fixed. There are many people who are concerned for the environment and this research will help to discover ways for them to voice the issue they are trying to resolve.
Project Timeline: For my project I plan on first finding a sufficient amount of research by February 30th. After that I will separate each major topic into a subheadings for the outline of my paper. I will use this outline to distinguish what areas need more information. By March 10th I will have a complete outline. Two weeks after that I should have my beginning draft done. Then I plan on working on it to perfect it anytime after that.

Working Title: “Lets converse about conversations: How gender role identification influence communication”?
Communication is the basis for all of life’s activities. Knowing how to talk to someone is the key to both knowing the person and them knowing you. So how do we want to talk to? And how do we speak to other, especially those whom we are intimate? A popular statement is that “ Women are from Venus, and Men are from Mars” hence why we never understand each other. How does that statement apply to relationships that aren’t of that heterosexual nature? How do lesbian/Gay couples handle communication? Does the mystery lie within the sex or the gender role identification?
Research Question:
How does gender role identification influence communication dynamics among romantic relationships?
Purpose:
Communication is key within any relationship, but good communication is the key to solving problems. My main purpose for this research inquiry is to derive the aspects of good communication and why those aspects seem to disappear when intimacy is involved. I live within a family of four children. I had three brothers and one father. I never had a problem communicating or understanding my brother or my father. I am currently in serious relationship with a boyfriend. We have been dating for almost two years. Within that time communicating with each other has been the most difficult and seemingly unachievable task. Good peaceful communication seems to elude us every day. For that reason I inquire what about relationship makes having a conversations so hard.
Project Timeline:
One semester to gather research, formulate clear data, analyze the data, determine result. Clearly report the conclusion or potentially lack thereof of the research.
Audience:
I will mostly direct my paper toward a younger audience. I want students within my age group to have a simple understanding of the basis of communication within a relationship. I hope to use strong academic research in a way that is readable and relatable. I hope to form a conversation amongst the UCF campus about what it take to talk to someone you are intimate with. There are thousands of students at UCF and maybe just as many couple. All of those couple vary from hetero to homo sexual. Many of those couples contain relational problems. Many are seeking out answers to those questions. I hope to provide a few answers by mean of this research.
Key Findings:
While entering the conversation dealing with this topic I have found many interesting notes. The approach of this research will mostly likely be of therapeutic nature. Many author of relationship and counseling book cover the topic of communication. Authors such as Susan Heitler Ph.D. shares in one of her books common communication pitfalls, i.e Aiming for Compromise, Blaming Game, Escalating Emotions.
Key Challenges:
The most challenging aspect of my research I believe will the lack of research I was able to find about non heterosexual couples dealing with communications. Most authors portrayed communication amongst couples that are hetero. I believe this will then burden to open up my own conversation for that aspect of my research.
Research Layout / Plan
ReplyDeleteMy research will have a therapeutic approach. I plan to interview a variety of couples about the way they communicate. I plan on looking up technique researches in this field believe would lead to good communication and testing them among my subject base. I plan to have at least 3 set of couples or 6 sets. One/ Two gay couple, one/ two lesbian couples, one/ two straight couples. I will be staying within my age group so my participant will be from the ages of 19-24. Factors such as racial background, family, and place of origin will be indeterminate. The project will start with questionnaires then conversation base on those questionnaires. Soon after I will give the techniques that need to be applied and then test the effectiveness. Lastly I will follow with more questionnaire asking the subject how they felt about the conclusion of the experiment. I also hope to research some couple counselor to gather input as far as my research question. I will also add online and textual academic research to finish of my inquiry.
